Over the last few days, I've seen several reports in the news about town hall meetings being interrupted by disgruntled, angry members of the audience railing against health insurance reform bills being discussed in the House and Senate. Far from being a way for Congressmen and Senators to interact with their constituents and discuss policy issues and concerns, lately more and more of these meetings have been turned into shouting matches and filled with hooliganism.
Now, I'm all in favor of fighting The Man; I have been for as long as I can remember. The problem is that these disgruntled, angry men and women who are are voicing such strong opposition to reform are being manipulated by the very people that profit from the status quo. Health reform isn't going to take away your existing coverage, or force old people to die, or make the federal government involved in every medical decision for your or your family. These are all bald-faced lies, skillfully sown by lobbyists and PR firms to stoke the anger and fear of the very people health reform would help -- all for the sake of those who profit by the current system.
Rachel Maddow described what's going on clearly and passionately last night in the segment below.
