Tristan's hat

Knitting has been going slowly lately. I'm currently trying to come up with an easy sweater pattern, since the boys have out grown their little Elizabeth Zimmerman sweaters and the Aran sweaters I started are too complicated to deal with while nursing. (2 babies + 2 cats + 3 knitting needles + 1 darning needle + kitchener stitch = 1 big mess)

It will be a while before I have much to show on the sweater front. Meanwhile, here's the pattern for Tristan's little hat. It's a really simple modification of Duncan's hat -- basically it's just one color and has a ribbed edge rather than a rolled edge.

Materials: DK weight superwash merino, < 1 ball, 1, 2 or more colors. I used forest heather. Size 6 circular or double point needles, or whatever gives you the right gauge.

Gauge: 1"=5 stitches, 8 rows

Pattern for circular needles:

Cast on 90 stitches, DON'T join ends.

Rib pattern:

RS: knit 2, purl 2 across, ending with knit 2.
WS: purl 2, knit 2 across, ending with purl 2.

Knit in rib pattern until hat measures 2.5 inches (20 rows).

Knit 1 row (rs).
Purl 1 row (ws).

Begin decrease:

Row 1: knit 1; ssk; knit 18, knit 2 together, ssk (three times); knit 18, knit 2 together, knit 1

Row 2: purl across

Row 3: knit 1; ssk; knit 16, knit 2 together, ssk (three times); knit 16, knit 2 together, knit 1

Row 4: purl across

Continue decreasing in pattern until 10 stitches remain. Pull yarn through loops; sew seam.

Wow! They look great! I'm a big fan of the ribbed one, myself. If you start now, you could have some sweet elf-type booties done by St. Paddy's day and they'd been the hit of the leprechaun world!

Aw-man...I gotta learn how to knit. How 'bout we trade lessons next time we meet up? I'll pass on my "how to use a sewing machine for kiddo clothes" tips and you can share your "how to hold several sharp pointing objects and make kiddo clothes" tips.

The babies are very cute and have gotten so big so fast!

Ha-ha! Laura, now that you point it out, they are about set for Saint Paddy's day. :-)

Summer -- it's a deal! Also, send me the circumference of a hat that fits Tam and I'll try to make him a hat. That sounds much easier than fighting sweaters right now.
