How things are going and photos

Today is my second day at home. Duncan and Tristan are still in the NICU -- and will be for a couple of weeks. I go twice a day for a three hour session of diaper changing and breast feeding. In between I pump and eat and pump and sleep.

The boys are doing really well. We managed to keep them in long enough to get past all the big risks of prematurity. Their Apgar scores were 8-9, typical for full term newborns. They positively howled when they were born. Despite that, and the steroids they got three weeks ago, the have needed a little breathing support. The first night they needed some CPAP treatment to make sure their lungs stayed inflated. They both graduated off of that the following morning, and since then have only needed a little extra oxygen to keep the oxygen saturation up in their blood. Duncan has struggled a little bit with breathing too quickly, but rest and food are fixing that. They've both steadily gotten off treatment after treatment. We're past the antibiotics, the IV fluids, etc., and the number of tubes and wires attached to them has steadily decreased. The big goals now are to get them stronger and more awake, so that they can eat more from the breast and bottle and less from gavage (giving them food through a tube in the stomach). Once they can maintain their own temperatures and eat on their own, they can come home. So far, they're doing most things ahead of schedule and we're hoping to get them here soon.

I'm putting more pictures up on flickr. They should show up in the side bar here later in the day. We'll try to maintain a trickle of content as we go along -- particularly since Duncan and Tristan are becoming prettier babies by the day.

You know, you guys REALLY let us know who is posting. I thought it was Dane writing until I got to that sentence.

That's what the "posted by" info at the bottom of every entry is for, James. :-)

Wouldn't it be more useful perhaps at the TOP? I mean, when you read a newspaper (online, of course), that's where they have their bylines. Books tell you who wrote them before you even open the cover. Newscasters tell you who they are before reporting the news, even if they've been doing the same job for 20 years.

Half the time I read these posts from my phone. While your line width fits nicely on my screen, your lengthy posts mean that the "posted by" info does not.

You make good points -- I'm not sure I have that much control over the layout (the drawback of using a free service instead of hosting my own), but I'll look into it.

That said, I feel pretty dumb for not noticing before.
